Run 2278 – 21st Feb 2011

Hares: Cinderella & Salt Peter @ Canoon Road, South Turramurra

Canoon C’noath…#@*X !..sprays Super..

Google Earth : Run 2278, 54 mins

What a start.  Starting a run with a check –  that’s not in the rules!  The exploded hashmen’s brains couldn’t take it.  TM Grape was in command, leading the pack back east instead of the south start.  Super pissed off home believing it for the best.  Lurch or was it Petit Merde or Plunger, could have even been LCL, anyway someone whinged and complained all the run about the slow part being crap use of territory, too <insert reason here>.  Something about a run that was set there in some recent past century, apparently the worst set run in the last 43 years of Hash, got to love the stories you hear on the trail, all true.  What happens on the trail stays on the trail.

As summer runs go 2278 ticked all the boxes – it was in the bush, it was tough, it was steep up, it was steep down, the rocks were slippery, it was a good length, and the rain held off.  There was plenty of chalk, arrows and paper.  What the F@#$% does the Hash want?  It was a Cnut of a run.

The run was expensive to set; Salty apparently spent a couple of thousand getting electronic equipment in place to enable the hares to set a social media run – only to have the technology fail at the last moment.  It is the thought that counts.

The On On was out under the stars as advertised.  Steak with salads, followed up by Fruit Salad and Ice cream.  One more ticked off by the committee.

The Mudgee weekend away is coming up according to Kyber and Grape.  (see more from Mr. Grape below)  Running or walking, drinking piss, eating tucker, horse racing and perving – with your Hash mates.  What else is there in life?

Downs for the Hares Cinderella and Salt Peter, for others see the pics.  There was great excitement caused by the attendance of a couple of possums.  A great summer run and On On.

On On,

Ever changing Hash running & TM report February 2011

What’s it all about? Somewhere between all the checks, on backs, false trails, late comer’s loops and the bucket a bunch of blokes get together to have a run which is not too serious and socialise as they do it.  Most seem to prefer to do this together rather than be on the trail by themselves, therefore the Hares are required to set a run that keeps the pack together, and in a perfect world all arrive back at the bucket at the same time.

How is this done?  As it is unavoidable that some runners are more athletic than others therefore the challenge for the Hares is how to slow the athletes down so the slow movers can catch up.  The hares look for trails running off their intended track, these are known as false trails and the hares mark these trails so the front runners are diverted down them.  When these athletes eventually find that the trail markings run out (this usually being indicated by an on back, arrows pointing in the direction from which they came) they return to the intersection where the false trail started and try to locate the markings directing them in the correct direction.  If the length of this false trail set by the hares is long enough the slower runners meet the front runners bringing the pack back together.  Yes teaching you to suck eggs, but many don’t have a clue or could not give a fuck.

Your TM this year was not asked to volunteer for the job by the last committee; they went to the unusual method of getting me back on committee by the old tried and proven Navel method of shanghaiing.  You get the guy pissed then belt him over the head, and he wakes up on board.  I was party to President Calici and his joint master Flying Scotsman waffling on about their replacements but never asked me to be on committee, and when I woke up with the sore head and said I am not on committee; I was told bad luck you are on as the year book has been printed with your name in it, and only one week before the AGM. What a bastard of an act.

Khyber the new president was now left to organise this bunch of drunken braggarts with no portfolios.  To avoid some of the chaos I decide to take on the role of TM and support Khyber as best I could. Well at long last I get to ensure all the summer runs are in the bush, no runs in Mosman during daylight saving on my watch.

The job of TM is changing, as the runners age the approach to the run must change, so how do I ensure that each run does embody “What is it about“ and ”how is it done”. Out of 100 plus members there are only about 12 that look to run all the way round the course, then a good chunk that runners, walk or run along in various degrees of athleticism and the ever increasing number of walkers which naturally spreads the pack out considerably.

My objective is not to change the run but manage it and it has been bloody working.  I suggested that in summer there be no checks only on backs, this ensured that all front runners do the falsey and after each false trail the pack regroups.  I have suggested that on backs be lengthened to allow the middle of the pack to catch up.  If not enough of the pack have taken the false trail to force a regroup then I may run it or guide them down the false trail. It has been working all summer. Last Monday some front runners passed slow runners multiple times and almost all of the pack was back at the bucket within 10 minutes.

The late comer’s loop, which has often been used, sends the pack off in the wrong direction and then brings them back to the start.  Last Monday instead of the traditional loop I set a check with two false trails; in hind sight one would have done the same thing.  In any case had the same effect and also padded out the run which was a bit short.  Unfortunately one of our mates Super Glue could not see the humour or reason for this action and got so upset he jumped in his car, pissed off and missed a good run and a good on on.  I am sure Khyber will reward him with a down down next time we see him.

Working the false trails to keep the pack together also requires me to go out on each run ahead of time so I know where the on backs are and how long they are. At the On On another of my good mates Jungle didn’t agree with my action on the run, sending him down the false trail and tried to ridicule me by comparing me with one of the new hashers which don’t know what they are doing, using somewhat smart arse sarcastic humour. The TM is a voluntary job and one can only do your best.

Now the above may explain to you what this new boy on the bloke thinks how the run should be managed.  Next week’s hare Calici said to me when I approached him about his run ”that the runs all right you don’t have to do anything” inferring he did not want me involved.  Therefore I am not going to bother turning up next week because I have the shits as I have put a lot of work into helping making this summer’s runs fantastic so you blokes have some fun and enjoy yourself.

If you don’t like the concept tell me, all can be changed.
