Run 2291 – 23rd May 2011

Mash and Bum crack Willoughby, Chastity takes a belt, Ambo Bligh takes his bloody mate’s head to hospital

Hares Bumcrack and Mash farewelled 44 starters after suggesting there were three trails set, for short walkers, long walkers, and runners. After heading south from the Willoughby Club, to behind the High Street shops, the runners were soon gone, leaving a large walkers’ group following. The trail zig-zagged around many streets to Willoughby Park, over the St Aloysius oval and eventually back to Tyneside Avenue. At this stage we were heading north convinced we were bound for all the alleys, driveways and convolutions of the industrial park on Eastern Valley Way. However at the Castle Cove Rd traffic lights we were forced to cross over and head further east. At this point several walkers including Simmo, WC and Moishe after checking their watches decided this was going too far and turned back for home. Meanwhile the trail continued on over the Castle Cove golf course to Neerim Road, then over Castle Cove Park to Lockley Street, past Chez Bumcrack, and eventually to the overpass above Warringah Road. At this point the official Runners/Walkers courses split leaving the latter group to find their own way home, while the athletes continued on over. Their route crossed Roseville Chase oval and Roseville Golf course to Park Avenue where the rest of the runners rejoined over Boundary Road, through the Barcoo Street industrial area, and finally finding their way to High Street and home.

Whilst on paper it seemed a long run, Lightning arrived in 1 hour 5mins, followed quickly by a burst of other athletes, principally because there were only 3 checks on the whole run! Mash expecting the worst, kept asking everyone, “was it OK?” Short Fuse said it wasn’t bad, Frenchie bitched about it. Chastity Belt failed to complete the run after taking a tumble along the way. Latest word is he doesn’t have to be ‘put down’.

These days it is better to have a shorter run with more checks to keep all the team together, making the run last just as long to fit the hour. After all it’s a healthy social event and not a race.

The On On provided a choice of 3 main courses (fish, steak and chicken) in an organised manner, with raffle tickets but no other prize. Down Downs were for the hares, plus Payling‘s son as a visitor, Moishe for his birthday and crashing off his bike during the Mini Big Ride, Simmo for something or other, Bunny for appearing on TV at the ‘Tah’s match, and God Knows for being featured in the Mudgee press. Best of the humour came from PeeDub, Mash and TicToc.
