CAREFREE’S “BIRTHDAY and END OF FINANCIAL YEAR RUN” FOR 2011. With able assistance from Kitty Litter
Free Care for a Kitty
Some ferry ride runs have been done too often. Across the harbour, down to Chinatown, then the Opera House, thence Observatory Hill and home across the Bridge. Not this one. Our hares did us proud by visiting a dozen inner city suburbs.
From Milsons Point it was a short walk down to Luna Park where Goanna was looking for a toilet. When the Park reopens on Friday will an early visitor to the 1900 vintage carousel be saying “Look Mum! Real rocking horse shit.”?
But I digress. The ferry departed on schedule and on a calm cold evening gave us a magic view of night-lit Sydney in its all glory. To me the best city in the world.
We disembarked at 6:25 at Jones St Wharf (huh? there is no Jones St within cooee of it) in Pyrmont and by the time we had dumped our bags in Pyrmont Bay Park we started bang on 6:30, or was it 6:35?
From the start through the Casino, an alien place to all except Last Card, then to Wentworth Park in Ultimo (no dogs to bet on this night) and then out to Glebe Point. We crossed the light rail into Glebe proper. It was here we lost Grape as he ducked home for a quickie. Then to Harold Park (no red hots to bet on ever again – sniff!) and along Johnsons Creek in Annandale. It was in the gloom here that the now TM-less pack lost Lightning and Little Shit. They ran an extra three Km and nearly missed the bucket.
The depleted pack headed through Forest Lodge and across the footbridge into the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus to admire the subtle products of the academic mind such as the Graffiti Tunnel. A cultural uplift as we traversed the quadrangle past the Great Hall then out through Victoria Park and briefly into Darlington where at great risk we crossed City Road and Cleveland Street into Chippendale.
The trail skirted Eveleigh St (was that cowardice or justified caution?) as we headed to Redfern and finally finished up at the bucket in Prince Alfred Park (remember the ice rink that used to be there?) in Strawberry Hills. Bang on the hour for both runners and walkers. Well judged hares. (Not jugged hares – that would be a real treat).
The On-On was in a pub in Surry Hills. $5 steaks and $10 beers, or was it the other was around. Our President managed the down-downs with difficulty in a very noisy environment and subject to the heckling of the locals.
Not many caught the train either home or back to the start. For example, on the 9:15 there was only Nautilus, Smiley, and your scribe.
