Hares: Wanker and Plunger in Mortlake
Another Run in the Inner West – and Another Bloody Long One.
A pack of 40 gathered in the Palace Hotel carpark minus the Moochers – maybe Grape’s directions have guided the Moochers to Manly or Yarrawonga? Hares were heard whispering they would not be around when pack returned, “On On” was called well before 6.30, trails for short walkers, fair dinkum ones and runners – what to make of all this?

The pack set off on loop around Mortlake Point before starting the run proper along foreshores of Breakfast Point. Running pack of 10 with Lightning and Flying Scotsman leading the way were kept together with some long on-backs before heading off towards Majors Bay and the Concord Foreshore Trail with a couple of more on-backs to keep the pack together.
Then arriving at the entrance of the Dame Edith Walker Estate hospital grounds the pack found the gates locked – undaunted Flying Scotsman, Music Man, Super Glue and a couple of others climbed the 8 foot wire fence before more resourceful (shorter) runners Kitty Litter and Lightning found a hole in the fence as the TM turned up shouting “head towards the hospital”. Through the open grounds the pack was back together again with Nautilus, Your Choice, Little Shit and Changi adding to the numbers. As Concord Hospital was reached a comment was made that there had not been one check on the run: well not till now. Runners off in every direction while some waited at the helipad for help before finding their way through the maze of buildings without the help of any patient trolleys.
On towards Brays Reserve and the Kokoda Track Memorial – by now a feeling in pack that maybe the hares had meant they would not be at the bucket when the pack got back as the pub would have closed by then. Over forty five minutes out and still going away from home, Ryde Bridge almost in sight and no way back. At this stage in considered consultation with the TM (yes Grape you say) all agreed that Papua New Guinea was a place too far and so aborted the trek and headed back towards home – only 6 or 7 kilometres to go. The pack all took a deep breath and pushed on as hard as they could after nearly an hour on trail with the directions from the hares on how to get to the run proving very useful. Even the TM was now running showing how much fitter he was after a year of trail reccying and guidance .
On Nullawarra Road remnants of the fair dinkum walkers were seen before short cuts were taken through the grounds and fields around Concord RSL and into the back streets of Mortlake heading back to the bucket. Near home Music Man spotted Carmalita (or was that Cabarita) and broke into a sprint to find his long time ago girlfriend but eventually gave up and also headed home.
After 14 kilometres and over one and a half hours later all the pack was back at the bucket with Changi musing as he trudged in that maybe he should have taken that SCB trail he saw a long, long time ago.
ON ON: Back patio of Palace Hotel only 30 yards from the carpark with basic steak and veg/salad dishes for $10. Conversations about who would be next President – many candidates covered including, Last Card, Wrapper, Music Man, Kitty Litter, Tyre Fruck, Pee Dub, Super Glue and others too varied to recall.
Khyber called the class to attention for the penultimate time with down downs for Hares for good run, Kitty Litter (for seconds?), Little Shit (for wife’s night off on Mondays?), Bum Crack (for a Pommy Queenslander?) and Bunny Trapper (for birthday/only Moocher found/lost in the West?). After 51 weeks the Pres had run out of ideas and then called for some humour.
Humour from Pee Dub, Tic Toc and guest appearance from Yakkity Yak. All appreciated with a comment overheard that it is all in the delivery?
Good run and night from hares just one week before the committee’s final act.

It’s been said that creativity is making mistakes, art is knowing what to keep. As for the found wood sculpture? True discovery is not from seeing new landscapes, it’s from seeing the same landscapes with new eyes. Now that is the artist’s vision. Well done, master Kai.
