Run 2297 – 4th July 2011

HARES: TIC TOC AND CAPTAIN BLIGH

WHERE: EDGECLIFF

Runs on the south side of the Bridge are always at risk of not attracting sufficient starters. But Tic Toc and Captain Bligh, having committed to a set minimum number of attendees for the On On, sought additional support from selected Harriettes. They rallied round and raised the starters to an excellent sixty in all. Several of the ladies took the July 4th date to heart and went all out dressed in stars and stripes.

The run made a smart loop before crossing the footbridge over New South Head Rd. Runners then branched off on a loop to Elizabeth Bay, meeting up with the walkers again as they crossed Rushcutters Bay Park. The trail then followed the harbour waterfront through Yarranabee Park to the end, to an obvious check – back along New Beach Road and around the perimeter of Darling Point, while the walkers short cut through Goomerah Cres. to meet the runners again on their return. Some were led an even shorter loop by Pee Dub thinking he knew the way, taking a large group of walkers with him, before finding the trail again. A long loop through the Latte quarter of Double Bay took us back across New South Head Rd to Edgecliff and Manning Rd. Then another check-back in Pine hill Avenue kept the group together, from where they then wound their way up Walleroy Road. The walkers split again for a short cut to the Lord Dudley Hotel whilst the runners took a longer route to the Jersey Road pub, where Tic Toc had prepared a colourful array of celebratory July 4th Red and Blue beers at the half way stop (where were the White beers?) Visiting Moonbeams lingered long at this welcome stop.

From there the trail took us past Trumper Park tennis courts and White City via a pleasant bush track, round Sydney Grammar Campus and eventually back to the bucket in a small laneway.
The local constabulary paid a brief investigative visit, but as they weren’t offered any of the Little Boy hot dogs and mustard provided by the hares, they departed seeking free Maccas elsewhere. During the bucket sojourn Capt. America and the Statue of Liberty (aka the hares) also provided a diversion with a visit to honour Independence Day. Although the run took about 1 hr 20 mins, the weather was kind and the run was full of interest so nobody complained.

The On On at the nearby Elvis Pizzeria was packed. Although ‘All you can eat’ food was promised, starting with spag boll, and followed by a variety of pizzas, most were still hungry and calling for more. However Elvis appeared on cue to sing his heart out, with assistance from the Hares, Darwin Don and Captain Knockers, plus a big singalong from the audience at large. Elvis performed for over an hour, and we finally left the restaurant at 11pm after a fully packed program and a great night
