Box Kite’s New Year’s Buster @ Buffalo Creek Reserve
_______________________________________________________________
To all you slack tarts and bastards of the POSH who failed to turn up for Box Kite’s and
Bigamist’s New Year’s Eve Run …..Shame on you !!
As it turned out it was a great little run which may be eloquently summarized by misquoting Abraham Lincoln’s famous phrase from the Gettysburg Address of October 1863 “It was a run of the Committee by the Committee, for the Committee.” Even then it wasn’t the full Monty of your prolifically numbered committee.
Actually we were enjoined by the additional and select company of Grape, Benny the Swede, Bruce the Goose, Frenchie and Your Choice (aka Spare Rib) who instantly became honorary Committee members for the evening. We also enjoyed the company of an honorary bloke………Changi brought along his niece, Rachel, freshly arrived that morning and still jet lagging from London. Her youth and ‘fair good looks’ alone raised the “beauty average” of the assembled company considerably, ….which at our median age isn’t very difficult.
And so with the starting numbers at only 9 or 10 at the most, we headed out on the boardwalk across the mangrove swamps (sic) adjacent to Sugar Loaf Hill. Nothing that the older hash lags wereunfamiliar with but as we haven’t tip-toed into this territory for quite a while, least of all in the daylight, itwas a pleasant change from the heroic escapades of the city fringe National Parks.
It was a run set by predominantly seasoned Box Kite (also acting as the evening’s TM ) who had laid plenty of cunning stunts which were pitted against the enthusiasm but relative tracking inexperience of Your Choice, who was probably sucked into just about every check-back along the run of which there were quite a few. .
Having said that, the overall trail was reasonably predictable at least to yours truly, who lives nearby and has run most of the trail options in this neck of the woods over many years. Essentially the trail started by running around Sugar Loaf Hill, along the GNW trail parallel to and adjacent to the mangrove stands, then crossing over Pittwater Road and into Kitty’s Creek Reserve and Portius Park running behind the houses
on Melba Road and then home via the Field of Mars. But time and again Changi was deceived (read coerced) into following the eternal bloody enthusiasm of the front runners and consistently selected wrong option at the various checks, except the last bit when he and Rachel short cutted to the bucket to get to the cold sherbet ASAP on a warm evening.
The other half of the committee had rolled out the ham, salad, bread loaves and other nibbles and Christmassy bits to be washed down by small Down Downs.
All up it was a select and quiet affair missed by most (stupid bastards) before we adjourned for the real knees up for the night ….to watch a few bangers being blown up around the Harbour Bridge and herald in another Rip-Snorting year of hashing. It just keeps on getting better.
