OYSTERMAN – Hawkesbury Barging
An out-of-towner tonight with those organised drinkers taking the train to Brooklyn for an earlier than normal run start at 1800hrs that’s 6PM.
So, a relatively small number did the public transport thing because, even if one did need to fork out $65 in cab fares to get to and from a station, the train stopped right there at Hawkesbury River with plenty of time to make the start and bugger the RBT. That small number didn’t include Kitty Litter, who for some unknown reason was convinced the train he was on wasn’t going to take him to Hornsby to catch the 5.08, so disembarked at Epping – this is gunna end badly. Yep, he turns up at 6.30, whilst the other 43 Poshmen sat waiting, in the oyster barge, for half an hour. Note to Hares: If the start time is 1800 then that’s when we go – f#%k the late comers. Even Superglue awoke from his afternoon nap to make the barge on time.We did have a beer or two whilst waiting. In a couple of weeks time we will have another 6pm start and failure to keep this time will mean you’ll be out for the nite and no one will be able to go help you. GOT IT KITTY!
The barge with the 225 Honda on the stern blasted its way to Little Wobby Beach where we were dropped at a wharf and told that short walkers must do just that. Sure did see why! After wandering thru the locals’ lounge rooms and bathrooms along No Far King Way we came to the split – straight up for the runners and along the flat road for the walkers. According to Your Choice the pack only climbed 172 meters – dodgey Fit Bizie, gps-ie thingy I reckon? On the plunge down the other side Music Man managed to coax a “we are on” murmur from Grape Ape as they slide down the leafy goat-track -the ideal trail for Jack the Ripper to take a dive. The beach at the bottom was a great location for the Bucket on a stinking hot night. Whilst Tic Toc bemoaned the lack of extra beer the rest of us took a plunge in the silty water. After the FRB’s had had their fill of cheese, cabanossi and pickled onions they were whisked back to Brooklyn whilst the rest of the pack drank beer on the beach and in the water – Tic Toc did mixed his first beer with seawater – not good. The barge returned to pick up the balance of the pack for the return trip. As we all walked along the road toward the On venue discussing what a great night so far, Prince Phillip asked Darwin Don “what else could he be doing on a night like this?” The reply – “I could have been home wanking”. Jeez at nearly 94?
The On was held at a new gourmet deli cum general store, especially organised to open just for us, where Mum and daughter served up a great meal including dessert. With such a big crew tonight there were extra tables and chairs set up on the footpath as well, which meant some hashmen were marginally cooler than those inside.
With Visitors On tonight there was a tribe of Down recipients. Firstly the Hares, Flying Scotsman and Calici Virus, and Calici’s mate and chief organiser on location Ian. Visitors came as a threesome – Big Willie, Miss Judy and Willie’s mate, a CIA operative with an Iranian passport (sorry! Not allowed passed the gate). Next up were Hanoi Bill and Kitty Litter. Hanoi for being here (Brooklyn) last week and Kitty for being here last this week. And more – Krud for being bitten by a snake and JTR for another fall (told yer!).
When it came to humour, S Bends announced he was a 41/2” wanker, Pee Dub gave us a business lecture and Tic Toc treated us to a Lesbian Iceberg on a hot night.
All very old jokes.
Now, the second piece of editorial. Tonight’s effort deserves a gold star for Calici. Apparently he was very concerned at the possible success of the evening. Well, he did something a little different – so don’t worry. Like in the old days, he used the assistance of somebody he knew to set up something a little different. Even if there would have been a slight stuff up it would have been remembered for that as well – better than a lot of Monday evenings which generally go right under the radar.

I boarded a bus to Central Station at 3:45 in time for the 4:29 to Hornsby. Had the instructions been more clear I wouldn’t have boarded an earlier train, then panicked and jumped off at Epping.
18:00 was the assembly time not the Run start time. I was there before 18:15 and the Run still set off two minutes early at 18:28.
I do apologise and thank you for waiting. I was confident that in an Oyster Barge full of beer, you wouldn’t leave a struggling mate behind knowing he was only a few minutes off course. KL
