As one grows younger, as you are all meant to be doing this year, one recovers the courage (foolishness?) of youth. So it was that 27 growing younger Hashmen were unafraid to venture into the strange land of the Eastern Suburbs – Double Bay in this case. They were well rewarded. Whilst the trail was always interesting and challenging. Certainly the latter, as I am told that there were 100 metres of climbing (and another 100 of descending) steps. That works out to about 500 steps. Hell the Giant Stairway out of the Jamison Valley is only 800 steps and that takes half a day! In between was a maze of narrow flagstoned pathways that had probably not been used since the last poor man left the area. The highlight was not just the gluhwein served by an hospitable Short Fuse, but the questions raised in the mind by the sight of two attractive young ladies departing from it just as the pack arrived. Hmmm. The trail was well marked too, at least it was where the arrows were. I appreciated how even the raised lips of the footpath slabs had been chalked. Did the concrete move for you too?

To quote the hares’ final message (which arrived too late to be sent out before the run)

Hashers Alert!

For those who consider Winter Runs to be boring, flat open roads -check out tonight’s 100metre rise profile about half of which is on clear bush-tracks.

The Night of the Thousand Steppes

Back at the on-on, at the Schnitzel House, most chose the chicken schnitzel – a large plate of battered meat and mashed potato with coleslaw side salad. Only one was trencherman enough to eat the lot. See him below being awarded a DD for his effort.
